Konferencja oraz wirtualna wystawa “Images of Identity” (18.12.2020-18.02.2021 – 3D Blue Point Art Gallery PUNO London) są częścią interdyscyplinarnego projektu badawczego: “The Question of “Identity” in an Interdisciplinary Approach 2020/2021″. Projekt realizowany jest we współpracy Instytutu Kultury Europejskiej Polskiego Uniwersytetu na Obczyźnie im. Ignacego Jana Paderewskiego w Londynie z Instytutem Malarstwa i Edukacji Artystycznej Wydziału Sztuki Uniwersytetu Pedagogicznego im. Komisji Edukacji Narodowej w Krakowie.
The conference and the virtual exhibition ‘Images of Identity’ (18.12.2020-18.02.2021, 3D Blue Point Art Gallery at PUNO London) are parts of the interdisciplinary research project: “The Question of “Identity” in an Interdisciplinary Approach 2020/2021″. The project is carried out in cooperation with the Institute of European Culture of the Polish University Abroad of the Ignacy Jan Paderewski in London and the Institute of Painting and Artistic Education of Art Department of the Pedagogical University of the National Commission in Cracow.

Zagajenie teoretyczne
Konferencja ma na celu połączanie działań z obszaru sztuk wizualnych z rozważaniami znajdującymi się w spektrum różnorodnych dziedzin nauk humanistycznych oraz społecznych. Wątkiem teoretycznym wspólnego spotkania naukowców i artystów stało się pytanie o „tożsamość”. To właśnie „tożsamość” bowiem pozostaje jednym z najważniejszych, będących wciąż “w procesie” zagadnień dotyczących wszystkich dziedzin życia człowieka: jego działalności artystycznej, kulturowej, społecznej, religijnej czy naukowej. Struktury świata ponowoczesnego obligują badaczy do wypróbowywania coraz to nowszych metodologii, wyrafinowanych środków interdyscyplinarnego rozumienia wymiarów procesu identyfikacji, zachęcając do nieszablonowego myślenia i mówienia o “tożsamości” (Serpe T., Stets J. E. red. (2019), New Directions in Identity Theory and Research, Oxford University Press). Już w późnych latach 50. ubiegłego stulecia Erik H. Erikson ‘neofreudysta”, wybitny amerykański psychoanalityk (pochodzenia niemieckiego), zauważył głębokie zależności geokulturowe, geohistoryczne oraz geopolityczne w postrzeganiu i odbieraniu problemów psychospołecznych związanych z tożsamością. Równocześnie wskazywał na dwie prymarne zależności w odbieraniu przez człowieka świata w kontekście kwestii tożsamościowych. Są to relacje w stosunku do siebie samego (“ja” przed lustrem) oraz “ja” przed światem (w relacji do drugiego człowieka oraz jego spojrzenia na mnie), a zatem także w kontekście konkretnej historii, kultury i tradycji. Perspektywa postrzegania tych zależności nie jest stała, ewoluuje wraz z cyklami życia człowieka (Erikson, E. H. (1959). Identity and the life cycle: selected papers. Wychodząc naprzeciw trudnościom topografizacji zagadnienia “tożsamości”, organizatorzy spotkania podzielili je na umowne panele tematyczne, zapraszając do uczestnictwa w konferencji reprezentantów różnych dyscyplin. Wyodrębnione panele odpowiadają dodatkowo PIĘCIU perspektywom twórczym podjętym przez artystów z Instytutu Malarstwa Uniwersytetu Pedagogicznego w Krakowie (szczegółowy opis wydarzenia patrz wydarzenie online: ‘Images of Identity / “Obrazy Tożsamości” ).
Panele konferencyjne
- Tożsamość wyrażona przez akt twórczy
Tożsamość jako słowo przechodnie jest pojęciem podstępnym. Może bowiem oznaczać identyfikację ze sobą (niepowtarzalność, oryginalność), jak i przeciwnie – utożsamienie się z czymś względem nas zewnętrznym, a nawet i narzuconym przez dowolną instancję. Równie niepokojącym pojęciem jest akt twórczy, za który przyjąć można, przy odpowiednich założeniach, nawet destrukcję. Na potrzeby naszej wymiany zdań uznajmy jednak, że między obiema stronami porównania pośredniczy pojęcie trzecie – dzieła sztuki. Być może okaże się wtedy, że istota tożsamości ucieleśnia się w akcie kreacji, ten ostatni zaś sprowadza się do poszukiwania, wypracowywania i zdobywania tożsamości. Jak to się ma do praktyki artystycznej dziś? Czy jest w stanie przystać na to, że tożsamość może wyrazić się bądź określić/ dookreślić poprzez akt twórczy? Czy w ogóle może się wyrazić? A jeśli nie tożsamość się wyraża – to co?
- Tożsamość osobista
Jeśli “tożsamość” zawiera się w obrębie naszego, jednostkowego odczuwania świata, czy istnieje możliwość odnalezienia wspólnych mechanizmów budowania przestrzeni osobistych? W jaki sposób pamięć autobiograficzna rzutuje na kreowanie obrazu otaczającej nas rzeczywistości i budowanie własnych historii? Czy chwilowa zmiana perspektywy może wpływać na architekturę tożsamości? W jaki sposób życiowe kataklizmy wpływają na kryzysy tożsamości? Do odpowiedzi na te pytania zachęcamy szczególnie osoby zajmujące się zagadnieniem “tożsamości” i jej reprezentacjami w ujęciu emotywno-refleksyjnym. Chodzi o dyskurs na temat unikatowych wizji samego siebie, określania się i doświadczania siebie, także w kontekście odtwarzania historii swojego życia, życia rodziny czy najbliższych osób. Widzenie świata przez pryzmat tożsamości narracyjnej staje się swego rodzaju konstruktem antropologicznym, budującym osobowość każdego człowieka. Podejmując perspektywę dialogu z samym sobą, często stajemy w obliczu (nie)rozróżnienia między “ja” i własną koncepcję siebie. Czy takie rozróżnienie jest w ogóle możliwe?
- Tożsamość (nie) heteronormatywna
Do panelu tego zapraszamy badaczy zainteresowanych potencjałem zjawiska nie-(hetero)normatywnego wyrażania swego „ja” jako wariantów widzenia własnej podmiotowości. Interesuje nas ukazanie problemu w kontekście zadań społecznych oraz mechanizmy definiowania lub/i wykluczania z bycia częścią społeczeństwa poprzez wprowadzenie w przestrzeń publiczną określonych normatywów. Istotne jest stworzenie szerokiej perspektywy badawczej, która pozwoliłaby stworzyć wielogłosową płaszczyznę, dla problemów jednostek o tożsamości (nie)widocznej i (nie)chcianej, często wstydliwej, odrzuconej, wyśmiewanej czy traktowanej jak choroba. Czy współczesne badania i zmiany społeczno-kulturowe mogą rozmontować zastygłe konstrukty, przełamać sztuczne przeciwstawienia, zburzyć zastygłe granice i stereotypy? Jakie są różnice geopolityczne i geokulturowe w postrzeganiu problemów tożsamościowych, w tym“tożsamości mobilnych” i “transgranicznych”?
- Tożsamość zbiorowa
Jednym z miejsc, w którym jednostki mogą czuć się bezpiecznie, jest wspólnotowość społeczna. Tego typu przestrzenie budują tożsamości zbiorowe, które bardzo często łączą różnorakie perspektywy historyczne czy narodowe, ale nie tylko one. Do tego panelu zapraszamy przede wszystkich osoby zainteresowane badaniami nad tożsamością wpisaną w ruch społeczny, wyrażający się często w działalności subkultur, ruchów politycznych czy religijnych (tożsamość zbiorowa jako konsekwencja konformizmu lub buntu, tożsamość oporu, tożsamość agresji, tożsamość ofiary, tożsamość afirmacji). Interesuje nas co sprawia, że niektórzy ludzie, częściej niż inni poddają się wpływom tożsamości zbiorowych? Czy istnieje rozróżnienie idei tożsamościowych, które z uwagi na daną perspektywę geopolityczną czy geokulturową, mogą się wydawać bardziej atrakcyjne dla pewnych grup społecznych?
- Tożsamość wielokulturowa
Żyjąc w późnej nowoczesności, jesteśmy świadkami szeregu skomplikowanych procesów powstawania tożsamości wielokulturowych. Zawdzięczamy to migracji społecznej i wymianie kulturowej, która zachodzi na masową skalę, wpływając na wszystkie dziedziny życia. Jak wygląda codzienność rodzin wielokulturowych? Jaki charakter ma proces ich akulturacji tożsamościowej? Czy może dojść do łączenia tożsamości etnicznej z tożsamością wielokulturową (wspólnota i różnorodność zwyczajów, obrzędów)? Do uczestnictwa w tym panelu zapraszamy przede wszystkich osoby zainteresowane zagadnieniem tożsamości wielokulturowej oraz zachodzących w jej obrębie asymilacji, kontynuacji bądź odrzucenia danych treści tożsamościowych. Interesuje nas szczególnie na jakich warunkach może dojść do osmozy tożsamości wielokulturowych, i jaki sposób to może objawiać się w działalności społecznej i kulturowej człowieka ?

Theoretical background of the Conference
The conference aims to combine activities in the field of visual arts with interdisciplinary considerations in the spectrum of various fields of humanities and social sciences. The theoretical approach of the scientists and artists meeting has become the question of “identity”. The most important issues which are still “in the process”, concerning all areas of human life: its artistic, cultural, social, religious or scientific activities. The structures of the post-modern world oblige researchers to try newer methodologies, sophisticated resources of interdisciplinary understanding of the dimensions in the identification process, encouraging unconventional approach to the “identity” issues. (Serpe T., Stets J. E. red. (2019), New Directions in Identity Theory and Research, Oxford University Press). In the late 1950s, the ‘neo-freudian’, Erik H. Erikson (of German origin), an outstanding American psychoanalyst, discovered deep geocultural, geohistorical and geopolitical relationships in the perception and reception of psychosocial problems related to identity. At the same time, in the context of identity issues, he pointed out two primal dependencies in the human perception of the world. These are relationships with oneself (“I” in front of the mirror) and “I” in front of the world (in relation to the other person and their gaze at me), and also in the context of concrete history, culture and tradition. The perspective of perceiving these relationships is not constant, it evolves with human life cycles (Erikson, E. H. (1959). Identity and the life cycle: selected papers. In order to meet the challenges of topographizing the term of “identity”, conference organizers divided it into 5 contractual thematic panels, creating an opportunity to contribute to the event for the representatives of various disciplines.
The panels respond to 5 creative perspectives undertaken by artists from the Institute of Painting at the Pedagogical University of Krakow (for a detailed description of the event see the online event: “Images of Identity” ).
PANELS OF CONFERENCE
- The Identity Expressed by the Creative Act
“Identity” as the word “passer-by” is a sneaky concept. It could mean identification with oneself (uniqueness, originality) or identification with something external to us, or even imposed by any instance. An equally disturbing notion is the creative act, that can assume destruction. For the purposes of our exchange of views, let us acknowledge that “works of art” lie somewhere between both sides, creation and destruction. Perhaps only then will it turn out that the essence of identity is embodied in the act of creation. How does it relate to artistic practices today? Is it able to accept that identity can be expressed or defined through a creative act? Can it express itself at all? And if identity is not expressed, then what?
- Personal Identity
If “identity” is contained within our individual sense of the world, is it possible to find common mechanisms for building personal spaces? How does autobiographical memory affect the creation of an image of the surrounding reality and building our own stories? Can a temporary change of perspective affect the architecture of identity? How do life’s cataclysms affect identity crises? We particularly encourage those who deal with the issue of “identity” and its representations in an emotional and reflective way to answer these questions. It is a discourse about unique visions defining and experiencing oneself, in the context of recreating one’s life story, the life of families or loved ones. Seeing the world through the prism of narrative, identity becomes a kind of anthropological construction, building up the individuality of every person. When taking up the perspective of dialogue with oneself, we often face a dilemma between the “self” and one’s own concept of self. Is such a distinction possible at all?
- Non-Heteronormative Identity
For this panel we invite researchers who are interested in practice of non-(hetero)normative expression of the “I” as variants of seeing their own subjectivity. We would like to show the context of social tasks and the mechanisms of defining and excluding from being a part the society by introducing certain normatives into public space. It is important to compose a broad research perspective that would allow the creation of a polyphonic plane, for the problems with identity that are (in)visible and unwanted, often embarrassing, or rejected, ridiculed or treated as an disease. Can contemporary research and socio-cultural changes dismantle negative structures, break artificial oppositions and destroy stereotypes? What are the geopolitical and geo-cultural differences in perception of identity problems, including “mobile” and “cross-border” identities?
- Collective Identity
One of the places where individuals can feel safe is social community. Such spaces build collective identities, which often combine different historical or national perspectives. To this panel we would like to8 invite all people interested in research on identity inscribed in a social movement, often expressed in the activities of subcultures, political or religious movements (collective identity as a consequence of conformism or rebellion, identity of resistance, identity of aggression, identity of victim, identity of affirmation). We are interested in what makes people succumb to the influence of collective identities? Is there a distinction between identity ideas which, due to a given geopolitical or geocultural perspective, may seem more attractive to certain social groups than others?
- Multicultural Identity
Living in late modernity, we are witnessing a number of complex changes on the formation of multicultural identities. This is due to social migration and cultural exchange, which occurs on a massive scale and affecting all areas of life. What is the everyday life of multicultural families like? What is the nature of their identity acculturation process? Can ethnic identity be combined with multicultural identity (community and variety of customs, rituals)? To take part in this panel we invite those who are interested in the issue of multicultural identity and assimilation or rejection of the identity content. We are particularly interested in the conditions under which the osmosis of multicultural identities may occur, and how it may manifest itself in human social and cultural activity?
